“I volunteer to improve the quality of life for our riders…but the truth is Shepard Meadows benefits me too. There’s nothing more rewarding than to see a child’s face light up when they ride one of our wonderful horses and feel happy and successful.”

Individual Opportunities

Shepard Meadows relies on our many volunteers to be successful! Whether you have one to several hours per week, we have a job for you!

We believe that our volunteers benefit from spending time at our farm, helping directly in program with participants, with facilities or barn chores. Our beautiful and peaceful farm is a respite for all.

The minimum age to volunteer is 14 years of age. If an individual qualifies to be a participant in our therapeutic program, they are usually ineligible to volunteer.

To begin volunteering with us, please complete and submit your volunteer application via email or mail to our Volunteer Coordinator using the button below. Please note the coordinator is in the office on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Each and every volunteer is required to attend our Orientation and Training Session, which is typically held on the first Saturday of the month. There are additional training sessions for sidewalkers, leaders and individuals to groom and tack horses for lessons.

Group Opportunities

We welcome volunteer groups from outside organizations. There is always much work to do at the farm! From United Way Day of Caring, to Torrington Savings Bank, Gilbane, or GE – we appreciate the help to make major improvements to our property.

Examples of Group Projects of 4-8 hours in length include:

  • Installing & Painting Fences
  • Painting Out-buildings
  • Farmhouse Improvements
  • Clearing our Sensory Trail
  • Cleaning our Barns and Sheds
  • Seasonal Ground Clean-up

All inquiries should be directed to our Volunteer Coordinator.
